It’s that time of year when a ton of apartments are back on
the market! Why? University and college
students are moving out and the spring real-estate market is just beginning. If
you are getting prepared to move, here are some tips to follow for an EASY MOVE!
Our step-by-step
guide for an Easy Move
Make a Checklist
Make a checklist of all the things you need to do for this
move, before, during and after at least 4
weeks prior to your move. It’ll come in handy and will keep you on top of
the things you need to do. Treasure this list and it will get you thrrough the
whole moving process smoothly.
Clean and Organize
Most important step! Clean your space and organize your
stuff 3 weeks before the move. If
there are things you don’t use or want, give them to goodwill. Donate items before
you move rather then taking them with you.
Start collecting
supplies for the move
Start stocking up on moving supplies 2 weeks before your move. In downtown Toronto, Rottblott’s is the place to go to get these supplies and for a
great price. If not, you can contract any discount warehouse near you.
*Tip: If you buy
10 or more boxes at Rotblott’s
you’ll get a discount. Here’s a list of supplies you’ll need for the move if you’re
DIY:
- Moving Boxes
- 2 Cube/3 Cube is a good size
- Books tend to be heavy! Put
books in smaller boxes, it’ll be easier to carry.
- Gaffer Tape/Duct Tape
- Exacto Knives
- Small Moving Dolly
- You can get a small
moving dolly from $30-$100.
- Newspaper or Tea Towels
- Use old newspaper or Tea Towels
to keep fragile items safe.
Pack each room
separately
1 week prior, pack
each room one at a time to stay organized. Then label the box according to the
room it should be in. There won’t be any confusion and your boxes won’t go
missing when you are unpacking them.
*Tip: For hanging
clothes, don’t throw them into boxes. Get a few garment bags from the dollar
store. Pack a suitcase with things you’ll need for the week and your go–to
items will be easily accessible.
Book the elevator
If you’re in an apartment or condo, make sure you book the
elevator 3 weeks in advance! It’s a really
busy time of year for moving so don’t be last in line!
Rally up movers or book
movers
We all know that we can’t move can’t be done alone. If
you’re on a tight budget, then you’ll definitely want to rally up any help you
can get. Contact family and friend’s 2 weeks
in advance. If you’re booking movers, you’ll probably want to book them as soon
as possible.
Book a rental truck
Keep it simple and do all your booking at the same time. For
DIY moves, we recommend booking a truck from U-Haul. If you’re not sure what
size truck to book here’s a hint – a 10-foot truck is a good size for the
contents of a 600 square-foot apartment.
Change your
information
Last but not least. Don’t forget to change your mailing
address and all the necessary information before you make the move. That way
the transition will be easier and it’ll be set up once you move into your new
apartment/condo.
Hopefully, all these tips will help make your moving as
smooth as possible. We all know that moving is not an easy job. If you have any
other helpful tips – we would love to know!
