We’re falling head over heels again for Art Deco. Our
devotion reignited by production and costume designer Catherine Martin for The
Great Gatsby.
The period sets that
she created for this movie are glamorous in a splendid money-is-no-object kinda
way. They are a true depiction of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald’s imagination.
Martin’s creative collaborations have been essential to
Luhrman’s plays, operas and films for 20 years. She won two academy awards for
costume design and art direction in 2001 for her work on Moulin Rouge. She also
designed the look of 2004’s Lavish Chanel No. 5 staring Nicole Kidman. While
undertaking the primary role of Art Director, set designer and costume designer,
Catherine has managed to collaborate with Designer Rugs, Porter’s Paints,
Mokum, and Anthropologie to create her own home ware
line. What a Woman!
Here’s a great
Q&A with Catherine Martin on LA Times regarding her recent project, The Great
Gatsby, and how she came up the designs.
